Arkansas permit test tested by the State Police

In Arkansas, a trooper-run exam station gives your permit test and a revenue office hands you the card. You can start at 14. Here's how the two-step process works, the four licenses you'll move through, and a practice test written from the October 2026 study guide.

Two offices, two steps

Step 1 · Arkansas State Police

Pass the knowledge and vision tests

Book a "Driver's License/Motorcycle Instruction Permit Test" in ASP's online scheduler. An oral exam for learning differences can also be booked there.

Step 2 · DFA Revenue Office

Get the permit issued

Take your passing result to a Department of Finance and Administration revenue office. The $5 exam fee is added to your license cost there.

The Arkansas Driver License Study Guide is what the exam is based on, and ASP links it from its Driver Examination page. ASP also runs an official practice test and an "AR Driver Testing" app. Use both alongside the questions below.

What Arkansas doesn't publish: the number of questions, the passing score, the available languages, any retake waiting period, and the permit issuance fee. None of these appear in the study guide, and the ASP exam page couldn't be loaded when we checked. Ask the exam station rather than trusting third-party numbers.

Intermediate License16–18One unrelated minor passenger at most unless a licensed adult 21+ is in front. No driving 11 p.m.–4 a.m. except for school, church, work or emergencies. No phone use except emergencies.
Class D18+Unrestricted.

The study guide doesn't set a number of supervised practice hours, so we don't list one.

Alcohol: lower thresholds than you'd think

DWI is 0.08% for adults, but if you're in a crash or commit a serious traffic offense you can be charged at anything from 0.04% to 0.08%. Under 21, underage DUI starts at 0.02%, with a fine up to $2,000 and possible revocation until you turn 21.

School buses: stop wherever you are

Arkansas's rule is blunt. When a bus shows red lights, you come to a complete stop whether you're behind it, in the opposing lane or in an intersection. Stay stopped until the lights go off and the bus is moving.

Myth vs. fact

Myth: You should stop immediately where an emergency vehicle catches you.
Fact: Clear the intersection first, then pull to the right edge. The law covers vehicles using a siren or air horn with red or blue lights.
Myth: Signing a ticket admits you're guilty.
Fact: The study guide says signing is a promise to respond, not an admission.
Myth: You must pull over the instant blue lights appear, even on a bridge.
Fact: Signal that you see the officer, then go to a safe, well-lit place. Avoid bridges and overpasses. If you doubt the stop is real, you may dial 9-1-1 to confirm.
Myth: A cracked window keeps a parked car safe for kids or pets.
Fact: The guide notes a car can climb from 70°F to 104°F in 30 minutes. Arkansas has an unattended children and pets law.

Work zones and cameras

Slow to the posted work zone limit and put the phone away. The study guide notes that Arkansas uses work zone camera enforcement.

Planning to ride?

The same exam stations handle motorcycle permits. The skills test can be waived if you present an MSF RiderCourse card within 90 days, and a passed knowledge exam stays valid for a year. See our motorcycle permit test for practice.

Bordering states

Families near the borders can compare Missouri (25 questions, 20 to pass), Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma.

Arkansas permit test FAQ

Who gives the Arkansas permit test?

The Arkansas State Police Driver Examination program gives the knowledge and vision tests. Once you pass, you take your results to a Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) Revenue Office, which issues the permit.

How many questions are on the Arkansas permit test?

The State Police study guide doesn't publish the number of questions or the passing score, and we couldn't confirm them from another official source. Use the official ASP practice test and the study guide, and aim to score well above 80% in practice.

How old do you have to be for a permit in Arkansas?

14. The instruction permit is valid for two years, and you must drive with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you.

Is there an oral permit test in Arkansas?

Yes. ASP offers a Driver's License Test for Learning Differences, given orally by an examiner. It's by appointment and not available at every location.

What does the Arkansas permit test cost?

Each written exam carries a $5 fee under Act 1289 of 2015, added to your license cost and collected by DFA. We couldn't confirm the permit issuance fee itself.

What is the curfew for Arkansas teen drivers?

Intermediate License holders (16–18) can't drive 11 p.m.–4 a.m. unless with a licensed driver 21+ or going to or from school, church, work or an emergency.
