Life on a Class CP
Your supervisor must be 21+, licensed for Class C, fit to take control, and sitting beside you. The permit is valid for up to two years. You'll need it for one year and one day with no major violations before you can move up. Seventeen-year-olds who have enlisted in the military are exempt from that wait (form DS-517).
The Class D checklist (TADRA)
- Age 16, and the CP held a year and a day
- Joshua's Law driver education (for ages 16–17)
- ADAP or eADAP alcohol and drug awareness certificate
- An affidavit of 40 supervised hours, 6 at night
- The road test: parallel park less than 18 inches from the curb. The traditional road test is passed at 75%. DDS also offers a Virtual Road Test option with an adult 21+ in the car.

Georgia laws with numbers attached
- Hands-free law: no writing, sending or reading texts, or watching or recording video. 1 point and up to $50 the first time, then 2/$100, then 3/$150.
- Under 21: under the influence at 0.02 (adults 0.08). A teen DUI at .02–under .08 means at least a six-month suspension. Teens are also suspended for 4-point offenses such as passing a school bus illegally, passing on a hill or curve, or speeding 24+ mph over.
- Passing: never within 100 feet of a railroad crossing, bridge, viaduct or tunnel. Be back in your lane before oncoming traffic is within 200 feet.
- Headlights: dim within 500 feet of oncoming traffic, and use low beams when following within 200 feet.
- Parking: no parking within 75 feet of the spot across from a fire station driveway.
- School zones: pentagon signs appear 150–700 feet before the school.
- Emergency vehicles: pull to the right and stop. Move over or slow down for stopped emergency, sanitation and utility vehicles.
Caveats: the downloadable manual is labeled 2023–2024, and our section references are approximate. We couldn't confirm Georgia's default speed limits or whether an official at-home permit test exists. DDS offers a free online practice test at online.dds.ga.gov.
