Where you can test

Whichever you choose, the permit itself is issued at a license center, after you show proof of name, age and address and pass vision screening. You need 20/40 in at least one eye, or an eye exam form from an optometrist or ophthalmologist dated within 90 days.

Not in the handbook: the permit fee and which languages the test comes in. Also, the February 2022 handbook is the newest we could find on the KDOR site.

The 14 → 15 → 16 ladder

14: instruction permit

Drive only with a licensed adult 21+ with at least one year of experience in the front seat, and nobody else up front. No wireless devices, except to report an emergency or illegal activity. The permit lasts one year, and you renew it by retaking the written exam. (Farm permits for ages 14–16 are a separate track under K.S.A. 8-296.)

15: restricted license

You need driver education and 25 of your 50 hours. You may then drive alone to and from work, school (attendance, by the most direct route) or religious activities, or anywhere with a licensed adult. No minor passengers except siblings, and no wireless devices. Online driver ed isn't accepted for licensing in Kansas.

16: less restricted

With all 50 hours, 10 at night, certified by a parent's affidavit, you can drive unsupervised from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., plus direct trips to school, work and religious activities at other times. You may carry one minor passenger from outside your immediate family. Under 17, you must have held the permit a full year.
