Wyoming permit test English only, and 80 mph interstates

Wyoming does several things differently. The test is offered only in English. Supervisors can be as young as 18. A Highway Patrol-approved hardship license lets some 14-year-olds drive. Unposted interstate limits reach 80 mph. Here's what's in the WYDOT manual, plus 25 practice questions.

The Automated Testing System

The written test runs on WYDOT's Automated Testing System. It covers signs (shape, color and symbol), signals and pavement markings, and multiple-choice questions on laws and safe driving.

The manual doesn't state the question count, pass score or permit fee, so we haven't verified them.

Getting the permit at 15

Bring a certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport or immigration documents, plus proof of residency. Your parent or guardian signs a minor's release. Pass vision screening (worse than 20/100 means a skills test) and the written test, then pay. You may drive with a licensed driver 18 or older in the front passenger seat.

The path to a full license

  1. Hardship restricted license (14–15): requires extreme inconvenience and living 5+ miles from school or work. It's approved by the Highway Patrol and valid 5 a.m.–8 p.m. within 50 miles of home. The restricted instruction permit is valid 60 days.
  2. Instruction permit (15): drive with an 18+ licensed supervisor.
  3. Intermediate license (16): requires 50 hours, 10 at night, certified by a parent, plus vision and skills tests (the skills test is waived with approved driver ed). You may carry one non-family passenger under 18 unless a licensed adult is present. No driving 11 p.m.–5 a.m. without an exception form (medical, work, school, etc.). Everyone must be belted.
  4. Full license: at 16½ with 6 months on the intermediate license and approved driver ed (30 classroom + 6 behind-the-wheel hours; certificate valid 2 years). Otherwise at 17.

Adjust for conditions

Wet road: slow 5–10 mph · packed snow: cut speed at least in half · ice: slow to a crawl

  • Move Over: on an interstate, merge away from working or emergency vehicles. On a two-lane road, slow by 20 mph. For an approaching emergency vehicle, pull right and stop.
  • School buses: stop from either direction. On a divided roadway, only traffic on the bus's side stops.
  • Passing: on a two-lane road, pass one vehicle at a time, starting at least two seconds behind.
  • Alcohol: under 21 at 0.02%+ brings a 90-day suspension (6 months for a second within 2 years). Adults at .08 get a 90-day administrative suspension. At .15+, an ignition-interlock restricted license for 6 months. Reinstatement is generally $50, and hearing requests must be postmarked within 20 days.

Wyoming permit test FAQ

How many questions are on the Wyoming permit test, and what's passing?

The 2021 manual doesn't give the total or the pass score, and we couldn't verify either. It does say missing 13 or more questions means a 3-day wait, which suggests a test longer than 13 questions.

What happens if I fail the Wyoming written test?

Wait 24 hours, or 3 days if you missed 13 or more. You may take the written test at most twice in one day.

Can I take the Wyoming test in Spanish?

No. The manual says the test is English only, but you may use an interpreter, and you can request an oral test in advance.

Can a 14-year-old drive in Wyoming?

Only with a restricted (hardship) license, for teens 14–15 who face extreme inconvenience and live 5+ miles from school or work. It's approved by the Highway Patrol, valid 5 a.m.–8 p.m., and limited to 50 miles from home.

How much is a Wyoming instruction permit?

We couldn't verify it. The fee table in the 2021 manual didn't extract cleanly, and fees may have changed. Check with WYDOT.

Is there a Wyoming DMV practice test?

The manual points to practice tests at gowyld.driving-tests.org. The 25 questions on this page are written from the WYDOT manual.
