Getting the permit

Schedule an appointment at dld.utah.gov. Bring proof of identity, lawful presence and your SSN, plus two proofs of Utah residency. Pay $19 (DPS doesn't accept payroll or two-party checks), then take the knowledge test and the eye test. The permit lasts 18 months.

Your supervisor can be a licensed parent or guardian, an approved instructor, or a responsible adult who signed for financial responsibility. Other passengers are allowed.

How long you hold it depends on your age

Age 15–17

6 months (for 16–17)

Driver ed + 40 parent hours (10 after sunset)

Age 18

No minimum

Driver ed still required

Age 19+

90 days

Unless you complete driver ed

Teen driver ed is 27 hours of high school classroom (18 commercial, or 30 online), 6 hours behind the wheel and 6 hours observing. On top of that, you log 40 hours with a parent, 10 after sunset. The license comes at 16. For the first six months, passengers are limited to immediate family, and you can't drive from midnight to 5 a.m. except with a licensed adult 21+, for farm work, work, school activities or emergencies.

.05, and other Utah rules

.05

Utah became the first state to set the DUI limit at .05 BAC, in December 2018. Commercial drivers are held to .04. Expect at least one question that tries to catch you with .08.

  • Unposted speeds: 20 mph in school zones during recess and arrival hours, 25 in business and residential areas, 55 on major highways as posted, and 65, 70, 75 or 80 on rural interstates.
  • School buses: on a two-lane road, traffic in both directions stops. On a multilane road, only lanes behind the bus stop, and opposing traffic on a divided road of four or more lanes doesn't have to stop. Illegal passing can cost up to $3,000.
  • Children: under 8 ride in a car seat or booster until 57 inches tall. Ages 8–12 must be restrained, and kids 12 and under should ride in back. Smoking in a car with children is an infraction.
  • Freeways: never leave the freeway by an entrance ramp. Keep two seconds of following distance.
  • Lane discipline: failing to stay in the proper lane caused 28% of Utah crashes in 2024, the top cause.
  • Low-speed vehicles max out at 25 mph. Licenses renew every 8 years (since January 2020).
