The 15½ → 16 → 18 timeline

15 years 6 months: get the graduated instruction permit. It's valid 12 months, and you drive only with a licensed Class A, B, C or D driver aged 21+ in the seat beside you. Bring a completed application signed by a parent or guardian (or notarized), your original documents, and be ready for a vision test and photo.

After six months on the permit: a Class G license, if you finished MVD-approved driver education or your parent certifies 30 hours of practice with 10 at night.

The first six months of Class G come with two rules:

  • No driving midnight–5 a.m. unless a parent or guardian is in the front seat, or you're driving to or from school, work, a religious activity or a family emergency.
  • No more than one passenger under 18 unless they're your siblings or a parent rides up front.

Adults 18+ get an operator permit instead of the graduated version.

Speed limits when no sign is posted

  • 15 mph approaching a school crosswalk
  • 25 mph in business and residential districts
  • 55 mph on open highways and urban freeways
  • 65 mph on designated highways
  • 75 mph on rural freeways

Freeway habits the manual drills

Metro Phoenix and Tucson freeways show up on the test. HOV lanes are marked with white diamonds and need at least two people in the vehicle. If you miss your exit, keep going and take the next one. Backing up on the shoulder or cutting across the median is never the answer. Move Over AZ requires you to slow down and change lanes for stopped or disabled vehicles. We didn't verify the penalty details.

School buses: stripes don't count

When a bus shows flashing lights and its stop arm, every direction stops — unless you're on the opposite side of a physically divided roadway. A painted stripe or a center turn lane isn't a divider. This catches many test-takers.

Phones, alcohol and belts

You may not hold or support a wireless device while driving, read or write texts, or watch video. Hands-free calls are fine, and you may report an emergency. The adult BAC limit is .08 (.04 commercial), but drivers under 21 can be suspended for any alcohol. Refusing a chemical test means an automatic 12-month loss of privileges, or 24 months for a repeat. The driver is responsible for belting every passenger under 16.

Examiners give commands in English, and driver-assist features such as auto-drive and parking assist must be off. Practice parallel parking without the camera beeping at you.
