What's on the test
The handbook lists three areas: highway signs and markings, traffic laws and safe driving practices. It doesn't say how many questions there are or what score passes, and it doesn't mention an online test. We don't repeat the 80% figure you'll see elsewhere because it isn't in the handbook.
Six months on the permit
Your supervisor must be 21+, licensed at least a year, and sitting beside you. You hold the permit six months and need six months with no moving violations or alcohol or drug convictions before your license. Driver's ed is through a DMV-approved school, in person or online, plus the Beginning Driver Experience Log (DLD-130):
| Your situation | Log requirement |
|---|---|
| Standard | Driver's ed + 50 hours, 10 at night |
| More than 30 miles from a school and no internet | 100 hours, 10 in the dark |
Your first license at 16 or 17
- First six months: no passengers under 18, except immediate family.
- Until 18: no driving 10 p.m.–5 a.m. unless you're going to or from a scheduled event.
- Drive test: using your phone during the test is an automatic failure.
Nevada rules that become questions
- School zones: 15 or 25 mph, as posted, from half an hour before school until half an hour after. Most U-turns are banned. If a crossing guard is present, wait until the guard has completely left the crosswalk.
- School buses: stop for a flashing red signal at any location (NRS 484B.353).
- Phones: calls only with a hands-free accessory. No manual texting or searching.
- Following distance: 2–4 seconds or more for cars, 5+ for commercial vehicles.
- Alcohol: under 21, a BAC of .02 to under .08 means a 185-day revocation. For adults, .08 or any detectable controlled substance means 185 days as well (.04 for CDL drivers). Having passengers under 15 aggravates a DUI.
